As summer heats up and energy use skyrockets, World Wildlife Fund offers some cool tips to help keep our world wild and full of life.
Conserving energy and using clean energy from renewable resources like wind and solar are important steps to help protect wild spaces and animals from global warming. The burning of dirty fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - for energy blankets the earth with carbon dioxide (CO2), trapping in heat and causing global warming.
Even a slight rise in global temperatures threatens polar bears that rely on disappearing sea ice to access their food supply.
Help save polar bears and all life on Earth by taking the following steps to cut emissions of CO2. Be part of the solution.
-Where possible, choose an electric utility company that uses clean renewable energy resources instead of dirty fossil fuels
-Make your next car one that gets at least 32 miles per gallon
-Replace worn-out home appliances with ENERGYSTAR (R) models
-Make small home improvements -- use energy-efficient fluorescent lights, weatherproof your house, plant native shade trees, clean vents and radiators, and/or install low-flow showerheads
-Whenever possible, walk, bike, carpool or use mass transit
-Adjust your thermostat by turning it down 3 degrees in winter and up 3 degrees in summer
-Recycle aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic, cardboard, paper and newspaper
-Keep your car in shape with regular tune-ups, oil changes and proper tire inflation
-Buy products that are made locally - cargo ships, airplanes and trucks burn lots of fossil fuels to transport goods
-Wash laundry in cold or warm water instead of hot
